Celebrating 20 years of interior design in Redding at Plaza Interiors

Celebrating 20 Years of Creating Comfortable, Livable Spaces

In August of 2005, my husband and I stepped into the world of furniture and design by purchasing a business originally known as Parmer’s Fine Furniture. He had met the previous owner at a charity golf event, and that chance meeting opened the door to something truly special. While many long-time clients may remember us as Parmer’s Fine Furniture, Plaza Interiors reflects the full-service design experience we offer today. In 2014, we moved into our current location and rebranded, stepping into our identity as a full-service interior design showroom.

When we started, we weren’t an interior design business. We were a furniture store. But it quickly became clear that our clients needed more than a sofa or dining table. They needed help with remodeling, space planning, window coverings, lighting, and more. We embraced the opportunity to grow with our clients and became their trusted design partners. We love helping people create spaces that are not only beautiful, but also livable and comfortable.

Starting in 2005 wasn’t easy. The economy took a hard hit, and by the end of 2009, nearly 40% of furniture stores in the U.S. had closed. We made it through by doing one thing really well: treating each client the way we would want to be treated.

From Tuscany to Timeless: Two Decades of Evolving Style

Back when we first started, many homes followed similar design trends. Think Tuscany-inspired looks with reds, golds, and olive greens. Over the years, especially after COVID, people began designing for themselves instead of for trends. Greys and neutrals had their moment, but we’ve seen everything from calming blues and greens to bold choices like a stunning red leather sofa. Our clients are now embracing their personal style in ways that feel right for them, whether that’s modern, transitional, farmhouse, or rustic.

We always coach our clients to invest wisely. Will you still love it in five, ten, or twenty years? And if you’re planning to move, will the piece work in a different layout?

With 20 years and thousands of clients behind us, our design philosophy has become centered around people. Furniture should fit you the way your clothes do. It should support your body, reflect your lifestyle, and suit your space. Many people have never experienced what truly comfortable, custom-fit furniture feels like.

One challenge we’ve seen time and again is window shapes and placements that aren’t functional. A window thirty feet up with a slanted top may look great, but it’s tough and expensive to cover. Being part of the early design process when a client is building gives us the chance to solve these challenges upfront. We may add power, extend a roofline, or opt for more practical window shapes.

Why Clients Trust Plaza Interiors

We’re not “hard sell.” When you walk into Plaza Interiors, you’re walking into a space we share with our clients. Our approach is personal, patient, and thoughtful. Most clients visit us several times during the decision-making process. We send samples home so they can see how fabrics and finishes feel in their own light and space.

If you haven’t bought furniture in twenty years, the idea of starting can be overwhelming. That’s why our designers make house calls. We start by seeing what you already have, what’s working, and what can be improved. We build space plans and design solutions that are easy to visualize and fully personalized.

We also collaborate with talented local upholsterers, installers, and sewing workrooms. We offer delivery, window covering installation, custom draperies, pillows, and more. Our network of trusted craftspeople allows us to deliver long-term satisfaction.

One of the most humbling experiences we’ve had was helping fire survivors rebuild their homes. Some just needed help remembering what they lost for insurance claims. Others wanted to recreate beloved pieces using old photos and manufacturer archives. For some, it was a chance to reinvent their spaces completely. Often, we were simply a compassionate presence as they processed and healed. We were honored to be part of that process.

You helped me feel at home again.

Our Standard Is Quality

We’re always looking for quality. How it’s built, where it’s made, and whether it can be tailored to our client’s needs. Can we change the fabric? The finish? We don’t sell “landfill” furniture. Some pieces out there just don’t last. That’s okay if it’s a short-term or accent piece. But for most clients, we want to make sure what they buy is going to last.

Sometimes the best choice is an older piece that just needs reupholstering. We don’t sell used furniture, but we have local contacts who do. We’re always happy to point clients in the right direction. If we can’t do something for you, we’ll help you find someone who can.

Sustainability isn’t just about materials. It’s about longevity. Quality furniture that serves your family for years to come is always worth the investment.

Proudly Rooted in Our Community

Plaza Interiors is located in Northern California and Southern Oregon. We focus on American-made, custom furniture that reflects quality. Our clients come from all over, including Idaho, Arizona, and Nevada.

We love working with local artists to bring meaningful art into our clients’ homes. We also regularly work with trusted partners like Mike Martin from Special Touch for upholstery and rug cleaning. Supporting the community matters to us.

We’ve especially loved supporting youth programs—from sports to robotics—and offering internships to local schools and colleges to help students explore interior design and small business ownership.

If we’ve had the honor of working with you over the years, we’d love to hear your favorite memory. Come in and say hello!

What 20 Years Means and What’s Next

This anniversary is a celebration of two decades working side-by-side with our community. We love what we do, and we love where we live.

We’ll be celebrating all of August with storewide savings and a few fun surprises. Stop by to say hello. We would love to see familiar faces and meet new ones too.

As for the future, we’re starting to think about what’s next. The business originally started with the Walkers 36 years ago, then passed to the Parmers, and then to us. Someday, we would love to see another family step into the world of furniture and design. Our kids are now young adults spread across the globe, and we look forward to traveling and spending more time with them.

Until then, we’ll keep doing what we love. Helping people design homes that truly fit their lives.
